Welcome to Lisaan Masry, the largest and most comprehensive set of learning resources for Egyptian Arabic
You can use the dictionary online, as an app on your phone or computer, or in PDF and Kindle formats, so it is available whenever and wherever you need it.
In addition to the dictionary, there is also a thesaurus, example sentences, an introduction to Egyptian Arabic grammar, and tools to help you learn vocabulary, improve your pronunciation, and read and write arabic.
Check out the table below for the features available on each format, then either go to the download page or use links on the left to get more information.
The word search facility of the dictionary makes it easy to find a word, either in English or in Egyptian Arabic, even if you are not sure how to spell it exactly. It is equally easy to use for Egyptians and Europeans, and is suitable for occasional use or for serious students.
Egyptian words are written both in arabic script with tashkyl (short vowels) and in european writing, and there are recordings of somebody saying the main forms of each word, and all of the example sentences.
22/5/2020 Pronunciation practice online
You can now practice your pronunciation online... just double-click on the 'play' button next to a word or example. You can record yourself saying the word, then listen to yourself and compare it to the correct pronunciation.
Unfortunately, browsers on iPhone and iPad do not currently support the features required to use this option. Apple promised that it would be available in iOS11, but it's still not working in IOS13.4. If you download the app from the app store, there is a pronunciation function built in to the app.
25/04/2020 More examples coming soon!
Arabic teacher ESRAA has started working on some new example sentences for the dictionary. She is also available for online lessons: click on the image below for details.
23/04/2020 Android fix for download and sound problems
Android versions 9 and 10 do not allow download using http (non-secure) connections. Fortunately, the new domain name supports https (secure) connections, so release 2.3.1 of the Android app fixes problems with download and sound by using https.
16/03/2020 New domain name, everything updated
lisaanmasry.com is changing its name to lisaanmasry.org: the old name will still work for a while, but please make a note of the new name. All of the apps and documents are being updated to reflect this change. If you are using the Java app on Windows and Mac, you should update it in order to keep it working. Updated versions of the Android and iPhone apps will be released soon via Google Play and App store. If you have already downloaded the kindle or PDF documents, there is probably no need to download new copies.
